Mind mapping is being used more and more in companies. It has several names depending on its origin, it is often called “mind map” at school, in learning “topogram” and in research “mind map”. However, it provides a visual approach to the idea which has multiple advantages.
The definition of mind mapping
“Mind” means “spirit” in English and “map” the map. This approach could be translated literally as “mind map”. The principle is simple, take a sheet of paper and put in the centre an idea that can be represented by a word, a drawing or a photograph.
It differs from a linear representation because it organizes ideas around a central idea. Unlike a list, it allows representing a set of ideas or tasks by a graphic representation that can be coloured with various geometric shapes.
To take an example, the mind map can be used, for example, to show a chain of consequences in relation to a central decision, or to show the elements to be taken into account as a result of this decision, or to highlight the stakeholders. The user can, therefore, be multiple and can concern a large number of subjects or practices.
Mind mapping, what is it for?
The main purpose of mind mapping is to have a representation that is easily memorable and more visually attractive than a long list of tasks. It allows you to organize your ideas, to synthesize as much information as possible thanks to keywords or visuals. Finally, it is simply a structured diagram that is highly memorable.
Its interest lies in the fact that it uses both hemispheres of our brain, leaving room for creativity and artistic expression while structuring and organizing information. It thus makes it possible to better synthesize a course, for example, or to understand how a whole is organized. It makes it easier to take notes and is particularly useful during synthesis for example.
